Daily Dose - Helios First Service Release

This week's Eclipse 3.6.1 release does not contain any new functionality but provides a healthy amount of bugfixes for the first service release of the "Helios" edition.  Helios consists of about 40 Eclipse projects, including IDEs for Java, PHP, C/C++ and more.  The next version of Eclipse, 3.7 codename "Indigo", is in the second milestone stage.

Apache's OSGi Runtime, Karaf, Gets an Update
Apache Karaf, which often is found working in tandem with Apache Felix, has been updated to version 2.1 recently.  The small OSGi runtime and app deployment container has added a JAAS database login module.  The shell console has also been made available in a non-OSGi environment. 

RIM Opens its PlayBook
The rumors of RIM's impending BlackBerry-tablet release were proven true today when the company introduced PlayBook, "the first professional tablet."  The device has a 1GHz dual-core CPU, 1GB of RAM, a 7-inch (17.78cm) display, HDMI and USB ports, plus a front and a rear HD camera.  PlayBook is based on a QNX OS and platform, and it has webOS-like app switching along with an e-reader and full document editing.

EnterpriseDB Aligns with PostgreSQL 9
The Postgres Plus commercial distribution of PostgreSQL has integrated some of the major new features of version 9.  These features include Streaming Replication and Hot Standby.  Now all of these new features are available with Postgre Plus' solution, which includes a high availability profile and compatibility layers (for Oracle and other vendors).
